For decades celebrities and musicians have taken part in activities seemingly unrelated to their industry as a way to help charity or even gain exposure.
Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournaments are a great example of this. In recent years another game has started to draw celebrities and musicians alike and in some cases Let's take a look at a few music and television celebrities on the poker scene. Hip Hop artists Nelly and Jay-Z are both big players on the poker scene in Las Vegas.
He garnered the attention of several poker media organizations in 2007 when he showed up to the World Series of Poker Main Event and took a shot at the richest prize in the game.
While he didn't get very far in the tournament, it did lead to him play in several additional poker events and even a short term sponsorship by an online poker site.
Jay-Z did things a bit more on the down low and stuck primarily to cash games in Vegas' casinos. However, he didn't keep it on the down low long as he has been spotted at times playing in Bobby's Room at the Bellagio, the highest stake poker game in the city. It has been rumored that he has even dropped $1 Million on a single hand.
Scott Ian and Sully Erna are two metalheads that are huge into poker. Anthrax's lead guitarist Ian has been big into the game since winning a celebrity poker even in 2007. Since that time he has been trained by the stars of the game and has been involved in several high profile events, including an annual trip to the WSOP. Godsmack's Sully Erna might be considered the man that made celebrity poker cool after his performances in the 2006 and 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event. In those two years, Erna outlasted thousands of other players to make the money in the event. There are top poker pros who have never cashed in consecutive Main Event tournaments, making this a significant accomplishment regardless of player status.
The list of celebrity poker players grows each year as the game continues to grow in popularity. Many of these players come to the game as a way to gain exposure, whether it be for themselves of even a charity they are representing. Others come to the game as a form of recreation as the game encourages creativity and provides a stimulating mental challenge. Of course, in the cases of the Main Event the money is also a lofty prize worth pursuing.
Regardless of their reasons for playing, you can be sure that we will see more stars of music buying into poker events soon.
