On January 22, 2016 Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, the Crown Prince of Italy, was honored at a Masquerade Ball by Uomo Moderno Magazine and Brindiamo! TV show at the Hudson Terrace Rooftop in New York City.
The VIP preview was a family reunion including many nobles with the House of Savoia, such as Marcello Tallarigo. Even a few Knights showed up, including Nicola Tegoni, a prominent member of the order of the Knights of Malta.
Shortly afterwards, I was granted an audience with the Prince for a brief interview.
YRB: What do I call you, first of all? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: Emanuele. YRB: Emanuele, you’re dressed very smartly. Who designed this? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: My friend, Philip Plane, designed my blazer. I am wearing a bit of everything, because these are my bespoke smoking trousers. YRB: What’s the philosophy behind your fashion line, PrinceTees? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: The philosophy is one day I come into my cupboard and open and I say,
“Why don’t have a luxury t-shirt that could represent me well?”
I like wearing t-shirts a lot. I think, today even you wear it with a jacket, with a blazer. People like to feel good.
I began seeing how could I put cashmere into cotton, so not to be too heavy, too soft. Then we created this cashmere and cotton t-shirt, which is called PrinceTees. We started one and a half years ago. Now we sell all over the world. Pajamas, sweaters, always with the same philosophy of quality and comfort. YRB: What do you think of the onesie? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: I have it in my clothing line, PrinceTees. YRB: What do you think of it? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: I did the onesie for women.
The onesie is very difficult for women – how are you going to the toilet? All that aside, I wanted to have cotton, so it’s very easy to wear.
I did the cashmere and cotton pajama onesie and everything with stamping. The stamp is based on an old Japanese design of the beginning of the century. It’s going well. I like sleeping a lot with t-shirts and nothing on.
Going forward, the idea is to look into cutting denim with cotton cashmere. The brand is doing quite well, and we’re going forward with new ideas and products. We’re in 14 countries, including Paris France. We will be in Los Angeles soon. YRB: What about your upcoming projects? Spaghetti Connection, what is that about? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: Spaghetti Connection is something very, very secret. I don’t know if I can speak- it’s a food truck. Imagine a prince having a food truck. . Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: It’s a fresh pasta food truck that hopefully will start … We are designing it and creating it.
We’ll begin with the west coast. We’ll begin in Los Angeles, normally in April, May. Hopefully, then if it works, we’ll go all over. No, I saw a lot of food trucks, and I see that there are no pasta food trucks. Gourmet, organic and where you do the pasta in front of the people. In one part of the food truck there is the “laboratory”, where they will make fresh pasta in front with organic eggs and flour- The Spaghetti Connection is also a famous erotic movie in Italy of the ’60s. Because it is very erotic to eat spaghetti. A lot of projects are in the works. YRB: Are you divided? How do you handle everything you do? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: I don’t know. It’s difficult, but in 24 hours you can do a lot of things. I also have a production company. Right now, we’re producing two very nice documentaries, one movie. I really love being here, and I’m trying to do more and more things to have the excuse to live in America. YRB: What’s your favorite thing about New York? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: I think the first time I came to New York, I was three or four, and so I know New York well. I like seeing my friends. I like going to see the museums, shopping and working, because I’ve also some business partners here. YRB: What’s your favorite pasta place here? Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia: Pasta place? You know Serafina? Fabio and Vittorio, they’re good friends. They do wonderful pizza.
