Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce David Hockney: Early Drawings, an exhibition of 25 drawings from the 1960s and 1970s, on view at 297 Tenth Ave. from November 3 – December 1, 2015.

Presented in collaboration with Offer Waterman Gallery in London, David Hockney: Early Drawings offers a rare glimpse into the artist’s life through portraits of his lovers, close friends, and colleagues such as his first dealer John Kasmin, the influential curator Henry Geldzhaler, and long-time muse Celia Birtwell. Many of the drawings will be shown in the U.S. for the first time, including works such as Kasmin, 1973 and Egyptian, 1963.

Over time, Hockney would continue to work in traditional media such as watercolor and oil, while utilizing photography, digital photography, early-computers and fax machines in growing his compositions. Now at age 78, he frequently challenges the possibilities of scale and complexity by sketching on his ever-present iPhone and iPad. Yet, as Hockney’s process evolves, drawing continues to inform his approach to every medium.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog presented in association with Offer Waterman that features rare archival photographs from the personal collection of Hockney’s first dealer John Kasmin, and a foreword by his biographer Christopher Sykes. David Hockney: Early Drawings debuted at Offer Waterman Gallery from September 25 – October 23, 2015. David Hockney (b. 1937) was the subject of a major retrospective at The Royal Academy in 2012 entitled David Hockney: A Bigger Picture. He is in notable permanent collections that include Tate Gallery (London), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum amongst others. Hockney lives and works in California.
